France 2016 Qualifying. Review of Games in Groups D, F and I.

Thursday’s action saw the team in three groups try to establish who will qualify for France 2016. Group F featured three games: Hungary taking on Faroe Islands, Romania hosting Finland and Northern Ireland trying to secure its spot in France in a game versus Greece.

Hungary won at home by the final score of 2-1. Romania couldn’t overcome Finland, the game ending in draw 1-1. Northern Ireland were able to defeat group outsiders Greece by the final score of 3-1. These results mean that Northern Ireland is guaranteed to finish at least second and, therefore, have qualified for the European Championship next year in France. Romania can join Northern Ireland in qualifying if they do no worse away at Faroe Islands than Hungary, who will travel to Greece on the 11th of October. Finland, Faroe Islands and Greece have officially been eliminated now.

Group D is a very tight race, with four teams having a chance to still qualify before Thursdays matches were played with Germany, Poland, Ireland and Scotland still in contention. Ireland hosted Germany and were able to secure a 1-0 upset of the world champions, which left Germany with the need to get at least a point from Georgia at home in the next game. Poland’s 2-2 draw against Scotland effectively eliminated the latter from contention. As a result of tonight’s games, Germany leads the group with 19 points, Poland and Ireland both have 18 points and they play against each other in the final matchday on October 11th at Warsaw’s Stadion Narodowy. In another game outsiders Georgia hosted another outsiders Gibraltar and won with the score of 4-0.

Group I only has five teams in it, so, two games were played.

Portugal were able to secure the top spot in the group with a 1-0 home win over Denmark and Albania were hoping to get a good results against visitors from Serbia, however, the game was tied up until added time when Serbia were able to score twice, beating the hosts by the final score of 2-0. With these results Denmark is currently in the second spot with no game remaining. Albania trails them by one point and will need at least a draw on October 11th versus Armenia in order to surpass Denmark for the second spot in the group and direct qualification to France next year. Serbia and Armenia are officially eliminated from contention.

On Friday we will closely follow the action in groups C, E and G. In addition to already qualified England and Austria several more teams have a good chance of securing their qualifications. Come back to read our review of the action.
